Setting Up Google Alerts
How do you set up a Google Alert? It’s surprisingly easy.
1. Set Up Your Account
First, create a Google account if you don’t already have one.
2. Open Google Alerts
Go to the Google Alerts page.
3. Enter Your Keywords
Enter the keywords for the alert you want to create.
4. Choose Your Options
Below the keyword box is a small link that says “Show options.” Click on that.
Here you can choose …
- How often you want to be notified.
- What specific sources you want Google to track. (Choose “automatic” if you’re not sure.)
- Your preferred language.
- The specific region you want to monitor. (If your business is local, narrow your alerts to your city. If you’re , include your whole state.)
- How many alerts you want. (We recommend choosing “Only the best results.”)
- The email address you’d like your alerts sent to.

Quotation marks in a search or alert tell Google to limit results to that exact phrase.
If you want to make sure you only see results for your exact company name, use quotation marks when setting up the alert.
Asterisks function as wildcards in searches and alerts. This can be useful if you’ve branded your company under one general name with multiple subdivisions.
Say your company is called Bob’s Home Services. Under that umbrella, there’s Bob’s Plumbing, Bob’s Heating & Air, and Bob’s Remodeling. A single alert for “Bob’s *” would catch mentions of all four names.
